Unknown heritage

The other day I was laying on the couch, my arms rested firmly beneath my head as I watched the movie Brave heart. Remember that movie? Before Mel Gibson hated the Jews. Or at least he wasn't so vocal about it. Anyways, I had seen the movie many times, yet continue to watch it redundantly because of my Scottish heritage. As I often do with action movies, I started to fill my mind with thoughts of courage, and imagine as if I were Sir William Wallace himself. Killing the English being the ladies man among my people. OK, yeah I know that's lame you say, and I guess it is, but you know we all do it. So (swear word) you and your judgmental self. I guess it's like picking your nose. We all do it, but it's not something we talk about. And if we catch another doing so, we often make fun of them. But this was not an ordinary daydream of, I save the world and rule. This was more. This was a reflection on my heritage and though I'm proud, I like most am also Ill informed.
How many times has your heritage been brought up in the midst of conversation? Most responses are quick. My ancestors are from so and so. But do you really know much more than that? I couldn't tell you any Scottish history beside what I learn from Brave heart and all the common Scottish tradition known by most. You'd figure we'd learn this sort of knowledge from our elders, but yet many of them are not sure themselves. Is this because we live in a time where the focus is always the future? Is this not a blind thought as history always repeats.
OK, by now you would have figured that I had taken on the task of researching the history of the Scottish way. But I haven't, and to be honest I doubt I ever will. Proud I might not seem, but I am. The fact of the matter is that this is not something normally urged upon you. Know one says learn about your heritage. Sure I guess a few people do take it upon themselves to do so, but most don't care, so why should I? After all we all get shit faced of St. Patty's day but how many of us are Irish, and what is that holiday really about? I doubt it's about Irish folks getting shit faced...
