The legend of the Jersey Devil

The legend of the Jersey Devil dates back to early Native American folklore, however the most common tale of this cryptic creature originates from 1735. It is said that a Mother had given birth to twelve children and that if she was to have another it would be the devil. Well that (swear word) had another child (Remember to practice safe sex or you'll give birth to a devil). The child was said to have transformed into a creature with hooves, a horses head, bat wings and a forked tail. No does that sound like the devil or George Bush? Anyways, the devil killed a midwife before vanishing into the Jersey Pine Barrens where is said to be living until this vary day.
Many have gone to search for this mythic creature without and success. Is this just another cryptic legend, or perhaps a living, breathing creature that has been turned into another fishermen's story. Most don't care as it has been marketing tactic for most business owners. Even the NHL's New Jersey devils have been named after this mythic creature.
I always found it interesting that we seem to hold onto the unknown. If we know about things we don't seem to care, but it's the what ifs in life that seem to really capture our attention. In the early 1800's Sailors were bringing to shore tales of mythic creatures of the sea. Those mythic creatures are now known as whales. But at the time those tales were nothing more then mythic stories. Surely we haven't discovered all living creatures. Everyday new species are being reported. Will the next discovery be the Jersey Devil?

Weird stuff
It's funny how you hear so many stories about mythic creatures. Mostly people are trying to get their 15 minutes of fame, but I guess in some cases theres a little bit of truth behind the story. If I ever saw something messed up I'd keep my mouth shut because people think I'm already crazy. Interesting fact about the New Jersey Devils naming the hockey team after the legend of the Jersey Devil though. That I did not know.
